2017年10月25日，IEEE Fellow Roy Smith教授应邀访问我院，于当日上午在将军路校区自动化学院1号楼405会议室与学院部分博士生开展了学术研讨会，并于当日下午在403会议室做题为“Buildings and Kites: Novel Energy Sources and Management”的学术报告。会议由自动化学院院长姜斌教授主持，自动化学院部分师生参加了报告会。
上午，学院部分师生与Prof. Smith开展了学术交流会，该会议以5位博士生代表汇报各自近期科研工作情况、座下师生提问的形式开展。5位学生代表的研究方向主要包括非标准型系统自适应控制、旋翼机容错控制、高铁牵引电机微小故障检测与诊断、刚柔耦合系统容错控制及互联系统容错控制，Prof. Smith就几位学生的研究提出了非常深刻的意见及建议，另到场师生受益匪浅。
下午，Prof. Smith在讲座中介绍了他本人及团队在节能及新能源问题方面的若干研究成果，主要包括建筑物中的节能控制以及新型风力发电设备两个方面。Prof. Smith指出，在欧洲建筑物中的能源消耗占总能耗的40%，因此对建筑物进行建模、辨识及控制是极其重要的。Prof. Smith以一个六层高共计110个房间的商业大楼为应用背景，为我们讲解了影响大楼温度的主要因素，并介绍了集中式及分散式温度控制方法；另外，Prof. Smith及其团队还致力于可再生能源方面的研究，研发了一种代替传统风车式风力发电机的发电设备，其设计思想来源于风筝，通过建模、估计、及视觉跟踪，可以设计控制策略使该“风筝”更有效地利用风能发电。Prof. Smith在节能及新能源方面的见解开阔了师生们在控制领域的视野，为我们对控制的研究带来了极大的动力。
最后，Prof. Smith耐心地解答了师生们的提问，并于会后与到会师生代表合影留念。
附报告人简介：
Roy Smith is a Professor in the Automatic Control Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH, Zurich) in Switzerland. From 1990 to 2010 he was on the faculty of the Electrical Engineering Dept. at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He received his undergraduate education at Canterbury University in New Zealand (1980) and a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology (1990).
Roy Smith’s research interests include: the identification and control of uncertain systems, and distributed estimation, communication and control systems. His application experience includes: process control, automotive engines, flexible space structures, aero-manoeuvring Mars entry vehicles, formation flying of spacecraft, magnetically levitated bearings, high energy accelerator control, airborne wind energy and energy control for buildings. He has been a long time consultant to the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory on guidance, navigation and control aspects of interplanetary and deep space science spacecraft. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, an Associate Fellow of the AIAA, and a member of SIAM and NZAC.
